The Chilean government has a clear purpose of expanding the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure as a pillar of digital transformation to improve people’s quality of life and productive development. 

Our main efforts are centered on extending the digital backbone to the entire territory, transforming Chile into a Digital Hub for South America, deploying 5G technology and connecting all schools with high-speed networks. 

Fiber optic backbone kilometers have been doubled (from 18,000 to 36,000 km), through subsidies for private investment to connect more than 202 municipalities to the digital highway. As a result of these advances in infrastructure, all non-island municipalities will have access to Fiber Optic networks. 

Following the Digital Hub vision, we are promoting the Humboldt Submarine Cable, which will connect South America with Asia, increasing the transmission capacity available in our region and diversifying backup routes for communications between these two regions. 

On the other hand, we have started the deployment of 5G increasing the available spectrum by 42% in the sub 6 GHz bands and adding 1,200 MHz in millimeter bands. 5G networks will allow achieving unprecedented mobile connectivity, in terms of coverage, capacity and quality of service; connecting hundreds of millions of devices, which will enhance productive operations and allow the creation of value-added services and leveraging an entire ecosystem of innovation. The introduction of 5G is expected to be a productive and digital inclusion engine for the country. 

By 2023, all public schools (with more than 5 students), which total 10,086 establishments, will have high-speed access. 

Four years ago, only 48% of Chilean homes had fixed high-speed internet access. As a result of the new public-private digital infrastructure projects, and the greater demand resulting from the pandemic, currently 67 percent of households have high-speed internet, and this indicator is projected to reach 80 percent in the next three years. Regarding mobile internet, Chile has reached a penetration of 113 accesses per 100 inhabitants, being the seventh country with the highest per capita consumption of mobile data in the OECD region. 

With these advances in digital infrastructure, Chile is firmly on the way to becoming a Digital Hub for the region.

El Gobierno de Chile tiene el claro propósito de masificar el despliegue de la infraestructura de telecomunicaciones como pilar de la trasformación digital para mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas y el desarrollo productivo del país.  

Nuestros principales esfuerzos consisten en vertebrar digitalmente todo el territorio nacional, potenciar a Chile como un Hub Digital para Sudamérica, desplegar la tecnología 5G y conectar todos los colegios con redes de alta velocidad. 

Para ello, se han duplicado los kilómetros troncales de fibra óptica (de 18.000 a 36.000 km), mediante subsidios a la inversión privada para conectar a más de 202 comunas de Chile a la carretera digital. Como resultado de estos avances en infraestructura, todas las comunas no insulares, tendrán acceso a redes de Fibra Óptica. 

Siguiendo la visión de Hub Digital, estamos impulsando el Cable Submarino Humboldt, que conectará Sudamérica con Asia aumentando la capacidad de transmisión disponible de nuestra  región y diversificando las rutas de respaldo para  las comunicaciones entre dichas dos regiones. 

Por otra parte, hemos iniciado el despliegue de 5G incrementando  en  un 42% el espectro disponible en las bandas sub 6 GHz y sumando 1200 MHz en bandas milimétricas. Las redes 5G permitirán lograr una conectividad móvil sin precedentes, en términos de cobertura, capacidad y calidad de servicio; conectando centenares de millones de dispositivos, que potenciarán las operaciones productivas y permitirán crear servicios de valor agregado y apalancar todo un ecosistema de innovación. Se espera que la introducción de 5G sea un motor productivo y de inclusión digital en el país. 

Al año 2023 todos los colegios públicos (con más de 5 alumnos), que totalizan 10,086 establecimientos, contarán con acceso a internet de alta velocidad. 

Hace cuatro años sólo un 48% de los hogares chilenos contaba con internet fija de alta velocidad. Como resultado de los nuevos proyectos público-privados de infraestructura digital, y las mayores necesidades producto de la pandemia, actualmente un 67 por ciento de los hogares cuenta con internet de alta velocidad, y se proyecta que este indicador alcance un 80 por ciento en los próximos tres años. Respecto al internet móvil, Chile alcanza una penetración de 113 accesos cada 100 habitantes, siendo el séptimo país con mayor consumo per cápita de datos móviles de la región OCDE. 

Con estos avances en infraestructura digital, Chile se encamina decididamente a convertirse en un Hub Digital para la región.
